EMILY OBERG FEATURE

KLARSKIN x EMILY OBERG

 Founder of Sporty & Rich

I start my day by waking up at 6am, sometimes 5:30. My team is based in Paris, so when I wake up it's already the middle of the day for them.

After waking up I'll brush my teeth, scrape my tongue, drink 1 litre of water, and stretch for 10 minutes.

Then, I'll have something small to eat like fruit and nuts or oatmeal and a cup of bone broth.

I'll start working for an hour or two then make a big breakfast, lately I've been loving sweet potatoes, bacon, arugula and eggs. I recently had my thyroid levels checked and I'm hyperthyroid, so I need to make sure I'm eating enough food at all times. I'll then begin working again for a few hours, then workout.

I make sure to stretch at least everyday, and I'll do a real workout 4-5 times per week. I love my private reformer pilates lessons with Formapilates in LA, or at home I'll do yoga, some resistance/body weight training or a hike. I play tennis 2 times a week as well and soon I'm going to start swimming in the morning.

Right now I am taking supplements to support my thyroid, immune system and digestion.

This includes a B Complex, a multivitamin, NAC, Vitamin D/K, Zinc, Selenium, echinacea, magnesium, L-Glutamine and a probiotic. It's hard to tell if supplements work, but I definitely think things like anxiety go down, and my digestion is improved when I take supplements to support my gut.

I feel like with supplements you need to choose the best of the best. It's easy to find with all the ratings and reviews these days. I'll read reviews all the time, and I also listen to what my naturopath recommends.

In terms of Beauty I don't think you need to spend lots here. I use the most basic, cheapest things and I haven't had skin issues in over 2 years. For beauty, it's all about what you eat and your lifestyle, products are just an afterthought.

My beauty routine includes Cetaphil face wash in the morning, Neutrogena hydro boost gel moisturizer, Costa Brazil face oil, and 10 mins of Gua Sha every morning and before I go to bed- so 20 mins/day total. I'll use a Skinceuticals retinol 2x per week, and exfoliate with Paula's Choice BHA liquid exfoliant once every 2 weeks.

Less is always more when it comes to skin care.

You asked about who I look up to for inspiration and mentorship.

There's a few women in my life who are older than me, and wiser.

My friend Delphine always gives me great advice and is there for me when I am having a rough time, she's also from Paris so I trust her opinion on everything style related.

My friend Shante is another person I see as a big-sister type. I met her when I first started at Complex Magazine in 2014 when I was 20. She took me under her wing right away and since then, she's the person I go to when I need life advice.

I also admire my friend Mimi Fukuyoshi— she's very smart and she has great taste. She's had an amazing career and is just a strong, self-assured woman.

And of course, my mother. She has been a single mom to 3 kids her entire life and somehow made it work. She has always been a hard worker and very independent, I get that from her.

One of my favorite and random books of all time is Scar Tissue by Anthony Keidis. It's so inspirational, and filled with wild stories. I also love Start with Why by Simon Sinek, The Pursuit of Happiness by Tony Hseih, The Mastery of Love, Think like a Monk, The Outliers. Anything about happiness and finding inner peace.

Films, Casablanca is my favorite of all time—  great writing, great actors, a great storyline and just a great overall life message. Other films that have inspired me is anything by Nancy Meyers, Do the Right Thing, Talented Mr. Ripley, Cinema Paradiso and La Vie Est Belle.

Finally you asked me about the Wellness industry. I think it's the fastest growing industry with the most potential, besides tech. My brand is really rooted in wellness, and we plan to expand on the wellness component. I think there's a lot of fluff out there, a lot of people giving advice who shouldn't be, or too many opinions.

The best way to care for yourself is to do what's best for you.

Don't listen to me or anyone else, find what works for you and don't beat yourself up if you don't get the same results as someone else, we are all unique and need a unique approach to our health.
